girl in red grapples alongside her heart and against her mind on chapter 2 EP

girl in red

From inside her Norwegian bedroom, 20-year-old Marie Ulven has spent the last year piecing together the vehicle of her musical ambitions—aka her lush, indie-rock creation: girl in red. With the release of her second EP ‘chapter 2’, Ulven has waded into entirely new depths of coy originality and unguarded confessionals. Pushing her DIY take on bedroom-pop to its absolute fringes, the five-song EP rollicks back-and-forth between a blend of lo-fi atmospherics and off-kilter, dream-daze rockers. To celebrate the new EP, girl in red is headed on tour with a Los Angeles show date at Teragram Ballroom on Sept. 29.

“watch you sleep.” and “i need to be alone.” bask in the sublime melancholy of Ulven’s grappling with love and mental health in a gorgeous fashion; with the former basking jubilantly in all the subdued sonics of its jangly guitar medley, even as Ulven proclaims in earnest: “I need to be alone or I’m going to lose my shit.” But her lyricism only gets sharper—dripping with an angsty, bleak humor—on the acoustic galloping of “dead girl in the pool.”

The morbidity is not lost on Ulven, whose songwriting drives a freight-train’s worth of wanton wit and intimate strife through a needle sized hole of emotional clarity; and she sticks the landing. On “i’ll die anyway.” Ulven sinks into glazed-over, psych-pop textures as she pulls the reigns on her downward spiral—but the bleakness never seems to find a grip on her heart. As on “bad idea.” girl in red voices an unspoken catharsis through the songs on ‘chapter 2’, a determined realization that these are the things that corner Ulven and plague her mind—and yet they won’t rule her forever. It’s in the grapplings with these that girl in red finds an affecting and admirable penchant for intense introspection.
